How Much Does a $200,000 Annuity Pay Per Month? (October 2026)

Updated October 16, 2026 by Kevin Edwards, California-licensed annuity agent (License #0D42517). Based on California SPIA quotes from our October 12, 2026 update.

A $200,000 immediate annuity often comes from a 401(k) or IRA rollover at retirement. At this size, the choice is usually how much to annuitize, not whether to annuitize at all.

$200,000 buys about $1,499 a month for life for a 70-year-old man in California at today’s best quote. The same premium pays about $1,416 for a 70-year-old woman and $1,242 for a couple. Starting at 65 means about $1,337 a month; at 75, about $1,756.

Best California quotes from our October 12, 2026 update (Securian Financial at every age shown), scaled from a $100,000 premium to $200,000. Non-qualified premium, monthly payments starting about one month after purchase, no cost-of-living increase; joint quotes are for a man and a woman of the same age. *Years of life-only payments to equal the premium, before taxes. Actual $200,000 quotes can differ slightly because some carriers price by premium band.

Annuitize All $200,000 or Half?

For a 70-year-old man, annuitizing all $200,000 pays about $1,499 a month for life. Annuitizing $100,000 and putting the other $100,000 in a 5-year MYGA at 6.10% pays about $750 a month for life, and the MYGA would grow to about $134,455 in five years if left alone. That keeps a reserve for health costs or a later income purchase, when you’d also be older and qualify for higher payout rates.

$200,000: Lifetime Income or Guaranteed Interest?

70-year-old man Immediate annuity (life only) 5-year MYGA, interest taken yearly
Income $1,499 a month for life About $1,017 a month for 5 years
The $200,000 afterward Used up to create the income Still yours when the term ends
Basis Best California life-only quote 6.10% guaranteed (Aspida Synergy Choice 5, $100,000+)

On $200,000, lifetime income pays about $483 a month more than MYGA interest; the MYGA keeps all $200,000 available after five years. Current terms for every insurer are on our California MYGA rates page.

Questions About a $200,000 Annuity

Can I roll a 401(k) into an immediate annuity?

Yes. A direct rollover into an IRA-owned immediate annuity avoids current tax on the transfer, and the payments are then generally fully taxable as income.

Is it better to annuitize all $200,000?

Usually not all at once. Many retirees annuitize enough to cover essential expenses and keep the rest accessible.
