At $500,000, carrier choice and how you divide the money start to matter as much as the payout rate. This page covers both.
Today’s best California quote turns $500,000 into about $3,748 a month for life for a 70-year-old man. A woman the same age would get about $3,539, and a 70-year-old couple about $3,105. Starting at 65 pays about $3,344; at 75, about $4,390.

Best California quotes from our October 12, 2026 update (Securian Financial at every age shown), scaled from a $100,000 premium to $500,000. Non-qualified premium, monthly payments starting about one month after purchase, no cost-of-living increase; joint quotes are for a man and a woman of the same age. *Years of life-only payments to equal the premium, before taxes. Actual $500,000 quotes can differ slightly because some carriers price by premium band.
Should $500,000 Go to One Insurer?
Immediate annuity income depends on the insurer’s ability to pay for decades. Many buyers at this size split the premium between two or more highly rated carriers. That spreads the risk and keeps each contract closer to the limits of protection from the California Life and Health Insurance Guarantee Association. Splitting can cost a little income if the second carrier quotes lower, so compare the quotes side by side before deciding. See our annuity company reviews for current ratings.

Questions About a $500,000 Annuity
Is $500,000 covered by the California guaranty association?
The California Life and Health Insurance Guarantee Association provides limited protection if an insurer fails, subject to coverage limits. Check the current limits before deciding how much to place with one insurer.
How many carriers should I compare at $500,000?
At least three. Payouts can differ meaningfully between insurers, and larger premiums make small rate differences add up.
