Last updated October 12, 2026. California rates are refreshed weekly; confirm today’s rate before you apply.

American National sells one of the broadest annuity lineups in California: Palladium MYGAs from 3 to 10 years, fixed index annuities, and an immediate annuity. I’m Kevin Edwards, an independent California annuity agent. Here’s who owns American National, how it’s rated, and what it pays in California this week.

Who Owns American National?

Brookfield Reinsurance completed its $5.1 billion acquisition of American National in May 2022. Brookfield later bought American Equity as well, and AM Best now rates the two together; see my American Equity review.

American National’s Financial Strength

In November 2025, AM Best affirmed the A (Excellent) financial strength rating of American National Insurance Company and its life affiliates. The same release noted that the group stopped writing new life insurance during 2025 and reinsured much of its existing life business, which leaves annuities as its core.

My Take on American National

Where American National fits: MYGA buyers with smaller deposits and buyers who want no market value adjustment. Every Palladium MYGA here accepts $5,000 and none carries an MVA. Its Smart Start Accumulator 10 CA also offers a 10.75% S&P 500 cap with a 1.00% minimum cap and no MVA.

What to watch:

  • The top Palladium rates need $250,000 or more. At $5,000 to $249,999, expect about 0.25% less.
  • The 6-year versions advertise a 9.75% to 9.90% first-year rate, but the rate drops to 4.75% to 4.90% after year one. Judge them by the guaranteed yield over the full term (5.57% to 5.72%), not the first-year rate.
  • Its MYGAs trail the market leaders by 0.30 to 0.65 points at 5 and 7 years.
  • On the SPIA, American National’s income is the lowest or near the lowest of the four California carriers for single annuitants. In this week’s quotes its life with 10 years certain option pays slightly more than life only for 65-year-olds and for couples, which is unusual and worth asking about.
