If you were quoted an “American General” annuity, an “AIG annuity” or a “Corebridge” annuity, they’re the same company. I’m Kevin Edwards, an independent California annuity agent. Here’s how the names fit together, who owns Corebridge now, and what its annuities pay in California this week.

American General, AIG and Corebridge: How the Names Fit

Corebridge Financial is the former life and retirement business of AIG. AIG took it public in 2022. In May 2024, AIG agreed to sell a 20% stake to Japan’s Nippon Life Insurance Company, and on May 5, 2026, AIG announced the sale of its remaining shares, completing its exit from the life and retirement business.

American General Life Insurance Company is the Corebridge company that issues the annuities, so it’s the name you’ll see on many contracts. In my rate data, the same product family appears under both names.

Corebridge’s Financial Strength

In January 2026, AM Best affirmed the A (Excellent) financial strength rating of the members of Corebridge Financial, including American General Life Insurance Company, with a stable outlook. AM Best views the group’s business profile as favorable, citing its broad reach as a major life and annuity writer.

My Take on Corebridge

Where Corebridge fits: growth-focused FIA buyers. Power 5 Protector and Power 7 Protector pair a 10.50% cap with a 2.00% guaranteed minimum cap, one of the higher floors on cap renewals in this week’s California data. That protects you better if the carrier lowers caps later.

On MYGAs, Corebridge is competitive but not the leader. Its strongest spot is $25,000 to $99,999 deposits, where the American General VisionMYG listings pay 5.40% to 5.75% without needing $100,000.

What to watch:

  • Most products carry an MVA. The Fixed 5 and Fixed 7 non-MVA versions give that up for about 0.05% less.
  • The income-rider versions (Plus Income, Select Plus Income) have much lower caps (2.70% to 4.90%). Buy those only if you plan to use the income rider.
  • Assured Edge Income Achiever shows a 2.00% guaranteed yield; it’s built for income, not accumulation.
