These are current California SPIA rates: the guaranteed monthly income a $100,000 single premium immediate annuity pays at ages 65, 70 and 75, quoted from 4 carriers that issue SPIAs in California. As of this update, a 70-year-old man can get up to $749.67 a month for life, a 70-year-old woman up to $707.85, and a 70-year-old couple up to $620.99 for as long as either spouse is living.
I’m Kevin Edwards, an independent California annuity agent. I re-run these SPIA rate quotes every week with the same assumptions so you can see how immediate annuity payouts are moving: a $100,000 non-qualified premium, monthly payments starting about one month after purchase, and no cost-of-living increase. Joint quotes are for a man and a woman of the same age.

How to Read These SPIA Rates
What is a SPIA?
A single premium immediate annuity (SPIA) turns a lump sum into guaranteed income that starts right away, usually within a month. You give the insurance company your premium, and it pays you a fixed amount for life or for a set period. Learn more about the types of annuities.
Life only vs. life with 10 years certain
Life only pays the most each month, but payments stop when you die, even if that’s soon after you buy. Life with a 10-year period certain keeps paying your beneficiary for the first 10 years if you die early, in exchange for a somewhat smaller check. For a 75-year-old man this week, the best life-only payout is $878.09 versus $795.74 with 10 years certain.
The payout rate is not an interest rate
The annual payout rate (12 monthly payments divided by the premium) includes a return of your principal, plus interest and the insurer’s mortality pooling. That’s why it’s higher than a CD or MYGA rate. Compare SPIAs to each other by monthly income, not to savings rates.
Why women and couples receive less
Payouts are based on life expectancy. Women live longer on average than men of the same age, so the same premium is spread over more expected payments. Joint income continues until the second spouse dies, which further lowers the monthly amount.
Your quote will be different
These are sample quotes for the stated ages and assumptions. Your income depends on your exact birth date, start date, premium, the source of funds, and the carrier’s rates on the day you buy. With non-qualified money, part of each payment is treated as a tax-free return of principal; payments from an IRA are generally fully taxable.
SPIA, MYGA or Fixed Index Annuity?
A SPIA is built for income you can’t outlive. If you want to grow money first and take income later, compare my weekly lists of California fixed annuity rates (MYGAs) and California fixed index annuity rates.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a $100,000 annuity pay per month in California?
As of October 12, 2026, the best life-only quotes on a $100,000 SPIA in California are $668.73 a month for a 65-year-old man, $749.67 at 70, and $878.09 at 75. Women and couples receive less because income is expected to last longer.
Does life only or life with 10 years certain pay more?
Life only usually pays more each month because payments stop at death. Life with 10 years certain pays somewhat less but guarantees payments to your beneficiary for the rest of the first 10 years if you die early.
Is a SPIA payout rate the same as an interest rate?
No. The payout rate includes a return of your own principal plus interest and mortality pooling, so it is not comparable to a CD or MYGA rate.
What happens to a SPIA when I die?
With a life-only SPIA, payments stop and nothing is left for heirs. A period-certain or refund option continues payments or returns unpaid premium to your beneficiary, in exchange for lower monthly income.
Can I get my money back after buying a SPIA?
Generally no. Once income starts, a SPIA is irrevocable and the premium cannot be withdrawn, apart from the free-look period after the contract is delivered. That is why it is usually best for only part of your savings.
